Grooming Myths

1) Dogs are cooler in the Summer if their coats are shaved off; FALSE

Shaving a dog off in the summer will not cool them off. It is important to know that that dogs dilate the blood vessels in the skin to exchange the warmth of the blood with the cooler surface skin.  That's why short-coated dogs and dogs with single coats frequently suffer more in the heat - they don't have the layer of insulating coat between the skin and air that double-coated dogs have.

It is important that double-coated dogs should never be shaved off in the summer. They do need to be bathed and have the dead coat removed to allow for the proper allowance of heat exchange.

The other problem with shaving them off is a condition called Post-clipping alopecia. Which is when clipping causes an arrest in the catagen phase of the hair growth. Coat growth

 

2) Dogs grow more coat in the Winter; FALSE

Your dogs coat growth is triggered by sunlight, not temperature

 

3) Shampoo products made for people should not be used on dogs; TRUE

The pH balance for a dog is 6.2-7.2  , a humans  5.2 6.2

epidermal on a dog is  4-6 , a humans  8-12

epidermal transit from formation to shedding  dog 22 days , humans  28

With all of these factors you can see why they should not be used.

 

4) Groomers sometimes tranquilize dogs prior to grooming; FALSE

Tranquilizing agents are classified as Restricted Drugs, and in most cases are only allowed to be administered by veterinarians. There are some dogs that are to dangerous for the groomer to handle and it is common to request that the dog owner have a veterinarian tranquilize the dog prior to its arrival at the grooming salon.
